Do organisations put the right people in management positions?

Do organisations put the right people in management positions? Is good management considered a skill whereby combined with a talented individual they could excel at being a great manager or is management more like a side gig where you are good building widget X, and because you been in the team the longest you get to manage the other team members?

Only asking because from my observations over the last 10+ years I have seen an ever-growing action from organisations where new managers are selected from the best ‘doer’, i.e the best developer or designer, or the person who has been in the team the longest. This obviously doesn’t include those whose desired career paths are to eventually be managers but instead have created organisational structures where if staff want to progress they need to move into management positions rather than the opportunity to focus on specialised skills and crafts.

I find this super interesting because this is the layer in many organisations that I think is vital to the success of an organisation. These people are the communicators of visions and directions. These people need to motivate and negotiate and make sure goals are met. Most importantly, these people need to care about their people.

Speaking from experience, working for someone who acts like managing their team is a burden, puts their arms up and says ‘you’ll self organise cause I’m too busy’, is a major factor in why organisations lose great employees.

Organisations need to realise being a good Manager is a fulltime job. Without getting too detailed into what makes a good manager, cause we could be here for days, I think organisations need to look for Manager like any good sports team looks for a Captain. They need talent and skill in managing the team, be able to group everyone toward the same goal, back the team in all scenarios and make sure everyone has what they need to do their best.
